It Is Best To Do The Right Thing
Everyone should have the right to be happy, right? But at what or
who’s expense?
Some people have the attitude of “if it feels good, do it.” Can you
imagine the kind of world we would live in if everyone lived in accordance with
that line of thinking?? I suppose that it might resemble something a bit
terrifying… like, uh, perhaps ‘utter chaos.’
I would not doubt that everyone reading this wished at some point
in their lives that they could do whatever they want, whenever they want or perhaps,
they know someone else who is narcissistic (sorry, gotta call it what it is) and
lives life in a self-serving manner such as to do as they please without
considering others.
So, whatever happened to the type of reasoning that led to attitudes
like “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Luke 6:31) yes, that
frequently used quote came from the Christian Bible. Another frequent quote I
have heard goes something like ‘do nothing out of selfishness, but in humility,
count others as more significant than yourself.’ (this is Philippians 2:3,
paraphrased). There are an additional 29 similar verses to this one in the
Bible.
We all make an array of choices every day. These choices affect our
lives as well as the lives of others, each in varying degrees. Not everyone
takes care in their choice-making decisions to consider how what they say or do
may affect the people they might interact with either infrequently or on a
regular basis.
Some people, on the other hand, take great care in choosing their
words and actions very cautiously so as not to negatively impact other people’s
lives.
All this ties into something I have talked about in at least one past
blog. And that is the subject of “feelings.” We do not necessarily “do the
right thing” because we “feel like it.” Seriously, people, we are ALL human, we
ALL have a selfish nature, we ALL (at least sometimes) want what we want, when
we want it’ whether it is good for us or those around us or not!!
I’m not as naïve as to think that all people will ever “do the
right thing” all the time. Nor am I self-righteous to think that I personally
could or would do the right thing all the time, even if I intended to. The
point is, as a Christ follower, we are on this planet to live as Christ did by
trying to do the “Right Thing” to set an example for humanity. No one said it
would be easy, but in the end, I think that those of us who do live like this
will be happier for it.
As for the rest, those who live only for themselves… good luck ever
finding true joy!
