In Christ Alone
In Christ Alone
Everyone who is reading this blog has just survived through Thanksgiving,
Christmas, and New Years. Christmas being one of two most significant holiday
seasons for people of the Christian faith. It is the time of year when we
celebrate the birth of Christ. Most believers know that no one knows the exact
date that Christ was born, and we may even be celebrating the birth of Jesus in
a different season than when he was born. All that said, it does not make this
time of year any less joyful. It is symbolic of our faith, and that is what
matters.
Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are also important times of the year
when people tend to get together with family and friends. These can be very joyfully
filled get togethers as well as signify possible stress, filled with familial
discord. We can each contribute to the ease or the difficulty that these ‘reunions’
bring. Most of us hopefully have the sense to forgo bringing up sensitive
topics relating to religion, politics, lifestyle choices and such and focus on healthy
communication and congenial relationships.
There are times and places to have discussions of a sensitive
nature, but not at the expense of forgoing the making of pleasant memories that
will last a lifetime. If you are anything like a communicator like me, you will
have some angst in having to hold back some things that you feel would be
important to talk about. This is where prayer comes in. Such a prayer may be something
like this: ‘Lord, is this the time and the place to talk to this person (these
people) about …., if so, please provide the opening and if not, please help me
know if and when it is appropriate for such a discussion’.
Christ alone will be the best guide for interpersonal communication;
Christ alone has given us the tools of how to act with one another. Christ
alone should be our compass for all life matters. It is not to say that we
cannot glean wisdom through various authors on any variety of subject matters
including communication, but if we seek wisdom through scriptures, chances are,
we will not need to look elsewhere.
So, as we start this new year, let us put aside our own personal
agendas, and seriously consider “what would Jesus do”. If we each put the needs
of other people first, this will be evidence that we are on the right track. I’m
not suggesting we act like a doormat and let people take advantage of us but
rather consider how our behavior will affect the lives of others before we make
significant choices, before we open our mouths, before we act on our own
selfish desires. I know I am not perfect, but hopefully this year, I will
choose Christ alone in everything I do. Will you?
